Add tax to a net price or strip it out of a gross one.
VAT and Sales Tax Calculator works in both directions, which is the part people get wrong. Adding tax is easy arithmetic. Removing it is not: to get the net price out of a gross one you divide by one plus the rate, rather than subtracting the percentage, and subtracting instead gives an answer that is always slightly too low.
Enter a rate and a price, choose whether the price you entered already includes tax, and the tool shows the net amount, the tax amount and the gross total as three separate lines. Seeing all three is what makes an invoice check quick, because those are exactly the three figures an invoice has to agree on.
A quick-rate row covers the common rates so you do not have to remember them, and any rate can be typed in. The arithmetic is the same whether your local tax is called VAT, GST or sales tax; only the name and the rate change.
The vat and sales tax calculator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:
Because the percentage was applied to the smaller net figure, not to the gross one. At a 20 percent rate, a gross price of 120 has 20 of tax in it, not 24. Dividing by 1.2 gives the right answer; subtracting 20 percent does not.
Not structurally. VAT is charged at each stage of production with credit for tax already paid, while sales tax is charged once at the final sale. For the purpose of working out the numbers on a single price, the arithmetic here applies to both.
Whatever applies where you are and to what you are selling. Rates vary by country and often by product category, with reduced rates for things like food and books. Check your local tax authority rather than assuming a standard rate.
Use the Percentage Calculator for that: the tax amount as a percentage of the net figure gives the rate.
No. Where two taxes stack, such as a federal and a provincial rate applied in sequence, run the calculation twice, once for each rate.
No. It is arithmetic. What rate applies, what is exempt and what you must report are questions for your local tax authority or an accountant.
