About the Tip Calculator

Tip Calculator does the arithmetic nobody wants to do at the end of a meal. Enter the bill and the percentage you want to leave, and it shows the tip, the total and, if you are splitting, what each person owes.

Quick buttons cover the common percentages so you rarely need to type one. A rounding option tidies the result to a whole amount, either by rounding the total up to the nearest whole unit or by rounding each person's share, which avoids the awkward moment where four people owe an amount involving fractions of a penny.

There is also a switch for whether the tip is calculated before or after any service charge already on the bill. Some restaurants add service automatically, and tipping on top of a total that already includes it means tipping on the tip.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Customs differ. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is common and defensible; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous. The tool lets you enter whichever figure you want to base the tip on.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Switch on the service-charge option and enter the amount. It is subtracted before the tip is calculated, so you are not tipping on top of a charge that already covers service.

How does rounding the share work?

Each person's amount is rounded up to a whole unit, and the small surplus is simply extra tip. It makes paying far easier when people are settling in cash.

Is a standard tip percentage the same everywhere?

No, and it varies widely. In some countries tipping is expected and substantial, in others it is a small rounding up, and in a few it is unusual. Check local custom rather than assuming.

Can I split unevenly?

This tool splits equally. For an uneven split, calculate the total here and then divide it according to what each person had.

Which currency does it use?

None in particular. The calculator works with plain numbers, so the answer is correct in whatever currency the bill is in.
