Percentage Calculator
Three calculators: percent of a number, what percent one number is, and change.
Find the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation of a list.
Separate with commas, spaces, tabs or line breaks, in any mixture.
Average Calculator takes a list of numbers and returns the summary statistics that describe it. The mean is the familiar arithmetic average. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted, which is the more honest measure when a few extreme values would drag the mean away from where most of the data sits. The mode is whichever value appears most often, and a list can have several modes or none at all.
Alongside those you get the count, the sum, the smallest and largest values, the range between them, the variance and the standard deviation. Standard deviation is the one worth understanding: it says how spread out the numbers are, in the same units as the data, so two sets with the same mean but different standard deviations are immediately distinguishable.
Numbers can be separated however you have them, by commas, spaces, line breaks or tabs, which means you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet without reformatting it. Both the sample and population forms of variance and standard deviation are shown, because statistics courses and real datasets disagree about which is wanted.
The average calculator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:
Whenever a few extreme values would distort the picture. Incomes are the classic case: a handful of very large values pull the mean upward, while the median stays where most people actually are.
The population form divides by the number of values; the sample form divides by one less. Use the sample form when your numbers are a sample drawn from a larger group, which is the usual case, and the population form only when you have every member of the group.
Yes. If two values tie for most frequent, both are reported. If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode, and the tool says so rather than inventing one.
They are skipped and counted, and the tool tells you how many it could not read. That way a stray label or a currency symbol does not silently change your average.
No. Commas, spaces, tabs and line breaks all work, in any combination, so pasting a column from a spreadsheet or a comma-separated line both work without editing.
Lists of tens of thousands of values are handled comfortably, because the calculation runs in your browser rather than being sent anywhere.
If the average calculator is not quite what you need, these other free tools solve closely related problems.
