About the WebP to PNG Converter

WebP to PNG Converter decodes a WebP image and saves it as a PNG, keeping transparency exactly as it was.

This is the conversion to choose when the image is a logo, an icon, a screenshot or anything with transparent areas, because PNG is the only one of the two widely supported formats that can store them. Converting such an image to JPEG instead would flatten the transparency onto a solid colour.

PNG is lossless, so the result contains precisely what the WebP decoded to, with nothing further discarded. The file will usually be larger than the WebP, sometimes considerably, which is the price of both lossless storage and much wider software support.

The conversion happens inside your browser using the canvas API. The file is read from your device, drawn, and read back out in the new format. It is never sent to a server, which means there is no upload wait, no queue, no file size limit imposed by someone else's hosting, and nothing of yours sitting on a stranger's disk afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does transparency survive the conversion?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are preserved exactly. This is the main reason to convert to PNG rather than JPEG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores every pixel exactly while WebP approximates, so a lossless copy of a lossy image is nearly always larger. You are trading file size for compatibility and for no further quality loss.

Will the image lose any quality?

No further quality is lost. Whatever the WebP decodes to is stored exactly. Detail the original WebP encoding discarded cannot be recovered, as with any lossy source.

Why will my software not open WebP?

Support outside browsers arrived late and many applications never added it. Converting to PNG is usually quicker than hunting for a plugin.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes the image locally.

PNG or JPG for a WebP photo?

For a photograph with no transparency, JPG gives a far smaller file at almost the same quality. Choose PNG when transparency matters or when the image is a graphic rather than a photo.
