About the CSV Viewer

CSV Viewer turns comma-separated data into a table you can actually read. Paste the text or choose a file, and you get headers, aligned columns, sortable headings and a search box, instead of a wall of commas.

The parser handles real-world CSV rather than the idealised version: fields wrapped in quotes may contain commas, line breaks and doubled quotes, and all of that survives. The delimiter can be a comma, semicolon, tab or pipe, which covers exports from European spreadsheets and from databases.

Nothing is uploaded, which is the practical reason to use this rather than a hosted viewer. Customer exports, financial data and anything else you would rather not hand to a third party can be opened here safely, because the file is read by your browser and never leaves the machine.

Who uses this tool

The csv viewer is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:

  • Opening an export without a spreadsheet application
  • Checking a file before importing it somewhere
  • Finding a row in a large export quickly
  • Reading a CSV on a device with no office software
  • Inspecting data you cannot upload to a hosted tool

Frequently asked questions

How large a file can it open?

Files of several megabytes open comfortably. Very large files are limited by your device's memory, since the whole file is held in the tab. Rows are paginated so the browser is never asked to draw a hundred thousand table rows at once.

How is the delimiter detected?

By counting candidate characters in the first few lines and picking the one that produces a consistent column count. You can override it when a file defeats the guess.

Are quoted fields handled correctly?

Yes. A quoted field may contain the delimiter, line breaks and doubled quotes, all of which are read correctly. Naive comma-splitting is the usual cause of a viewer showing a mangled table.

Does sorting change my file?

No. Sorting affects the view only. Exporting gives you the rows in the order currently displayed, which is sometimes exactly what you want.

What about files with a different encoding?

Files are read as UTF-8, which covers almost everything. A file saved in an older regional encoding may show replacement characters in accented text; re-save it as UTF-8 to fix that.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser and never crosses the network.
