About the UUID Generator

A UUID is a 128-bit identifier written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five hyphenated groups. The point of it is that two systems can each invent identifiers forever without ever agreeing on a scheme and still not collide. That makes UUIDs the usual choice for primary keys in distributed systems, for file names, for request identifiers in logs and for anything generated on a client before it reaches a server.

This generator produces version 4 UUIDs, which are random apart from the few bits that record the version and variant. Randomness comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, not from the ordinary random function, which matters whenever an identifier should be unguessable as well as unique.

You can generate up to a thousand at once and format them to suit the system that will consume them: uppercase, wrapped in braces as some Microsoft tooling expects, or stripped of hyphens for a compact 32-character string. A nil UUID of all zeros is also available, since it is the conventional placeholder for an absent value.

How to use the UUID Generator

  1. Choose how many you needOne for a quick identifier, or up to a thousand for seeding test data.
  2. Pick a formatLowercase with hyphens is the standard. Uppercase, braces and no hyphens are available for systems that expect them.
  3. Press GenerateA fresh batch appears instantly.
  4. Copy or downloadTake the list with the copy button, or save it as a text file.

Features

  • Version 4 UUIDs from the browser's cryptographic randomness
  • Generate between 1 and 1000 at a time
  • Lowercase or uppercase output
  • Optional braces, and an option to strip hyphens
  • A nil UUID for use as a placeholder
  • Copy or download the whole batch
  • Nothing stored or transmitted

Who uses this tool

The uuid generator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:

  • Creating primary keys that do not depend on a database sequence
  • Generating request or trace identifiers for logging
  • Seeding a test database with realistic identifiers
  • Naming uploaded files so two users cannot overwrite each other
  • Producing an idempotency key for an API call

Frequently asked questions

How likely is a collision?

Vanishingly unlikely. A version 4 UUID carries 122 random bits. You would need to generate billions of them every second for a century before a collision became probable, which is why systems treat them as unique without checking.

What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?

They are the same thing. GUID is the name Microsoft uses, which is also why braces around the value are a common formatting convention in that ecosystem.

What do version 1 and version 7 UUIDs do differently?

Version 1 embeds a timestamp and the machine's network address, which leaks information. Version 7 embeds a timestamp but uses random bits for the rest, so identifiers sort by creation time, which helps database index performance. This tool produces version 4, the general-purpose random variant.

Are these safe to use as security tokens?

They are unpredictable, because they come from a cryptographic random source. Even so, an identifier and a secret are different things: a UUID in a URL is visible to anyone who sees the URL, so do not rely on it alone to protect private data.

Why does the nil UUID exist?

It is the agreed way to say no identifier. All-zero values are reserved for exactly this purpose so that code does not have to invent its own placeholder.

Are generated UUIDs stored?

No. They are created in your browser, shown once, and discarded when you close the tab.
