This is a general calculator, not medical advice. BMI cannot measure body composition, fitness or health, and it does not apply to children, who are assessed on growth charts. Speak to a doctor or another qualified healthcare professional about any question concerning your weight or health.
Body mass index is a single number calculated from height and weight. In metric units it is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared; the imperial version uses pounds and inches with a conversion factor. This calculator accepts either and shows the result alongside the category the figure falls into under the standard adult ranges.
BMI was designed in the nineteenth century to describe populations, not individuals, and that is still what it does best. It takes no account of how much of a person's weight is muscle, where that weight sits, or differences between age groups and ancestries. A very muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight get the same number, which tells you something about the limits of the measure.
Treat the result as one rough indicator among many. It is not a diagnosis and it says nothing about your health on its own. Anyone with a question about their weight or health should speak to a doctor or another qualified healthcare professional, who can consider the full picture.
The bmi calculator is used by writers, developers, students, marketers and anyone else who needs the job done once without installing software. Common cases include:
No single number can be. BMI ignores muscle mass, body composition, fat distribution, age and ancestry, all of which matter. It is a crude screening figure that works reasonably at the scale of a population and poorly for any particular individual.
Not in the same way. Children and teenagers are assessed against age and sex specific growth charts rather than fixed adult categories, so an adult BMI figure is not meaningful for them.
Muscle is denser than fat, so a muscular body weighs more for its height. The formula cannot distinguish the two, which is why trained athletes frequently land in categories that do not reflect their health at all.
Metric: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Imperial: weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703. Both produce the same figure for the same person.
No. This calculator does the arithmetic and nothing more. It is not medical advice and cannot assess your health. Speak to a doctor or another qualified professional about anything to do with your weight or wellbeing.
No. The figures stay in the page, are never sent anywhere, and are discarded when you close the tab.
